Far North Matariki

Cheryl Rapira welcomes you to Awanui Visitor Centre. Awanui is at the junction of State Highways 1 and 10, just north of the main town of Kaitaia, in the far north of the North Island - First Region of New Zealand.

Awanui is the front door to the narrow Aupouri Peninsula which stretches to the northern tip of New Zealand at Cape Reinga. On the west coast of the peninsula is the famous Ninety Mile Beach.

This stretches from Shipwreck Bay at Ahipara in the south up to just short of Cape Reinga in the north. Our area has a warm sub-tropical climate, with hundreds of kilometres of unspoiled coastline and an abundance of safe and uncrowded beaches.

These range from Pohutukawa-fringed, tranquil white sands to rugged rocky coves and some of the finest surfing beaches in the world.

We are located on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway touring route and a stay in this area is ideal for exploring the real far north of New Zealand.

This is not only a holiday paradise but a wonderful place to live and work.

Awanui Visitor Centre can answer all your questions about the area.
