About this area

 Places to visit

Our area is steeped in pioneering history and maori legend, home of the giant swamp kauri and treasured kauri gum. Experience our unspoiled beaches to swim, snorkel and gather shellfish, take time out to enjoy some of the best fishing waters in the world. The friendly local hospitality will assure your stay in the real Far North as something special.

This was one of the earliest parts of New Zealand to be settled by Europeans. Mangonui is one of the oldest ports, dating from the early 1800s when it was a whaling base and there is an interesting heritage trail. Across the harbour at Butler Point is a whaling museum. There are potteries at Fern Flat, Kiwi house and Glow worm caves at Fairburn and Matthews historic vehicle collection outside Taipa.

Kauri forests were a major industry in this area and gumdigging provided the livelyhood for most of the Dalmatian immigrants. At Awanui there is the Ancient Kauri Kingdom and just north is Gumdiggers Park. There is an interesting local museum in Kaitaia and the Subritzky Historic Homestead at Houhora.

Take an adventurous journey along famous Ninety Mile Beach. Visit legendary Cape Reinga where the restless Pacific Ocean collides in foaming anger with the Tasman Sea and see the lonely Pohutukawa tree from where, in maori legend, the spirits depart this world.

 Cruising

There are few places in the world that can match the coastal run from Auckland to Northland.

Whangaroa harbour, 40 nautical miles east of Awanui offers very sheltered anchorage and a unique atmosphere. Shelter can be found in Mangonui Harbour, 20 nautical miles east, and in the Rangaunu, Houhora and Parengerenga Harbours of the east coast.

The west coast is rather more exposed but there is some shelter at Shipwreck Bay.

 Diving
Some of the most easily accessed dive and snorkeling sites exist from the Karikari Peninsula in Doubtless Bay and Rangaunu Harbour. Home to numerous black-coral colonies, the area offers everything from walk-in beach dives to some of the most spectacular pinnacle dives in the world. Further east, at the Cavalli Islands, you will find the wreck of the Rainbow Warrior, sunk in 1987, which hosts an ever-growing display of marine life.

 Fishing

Zane Grey famously described New Zealand as "an angler's El Dorado" and nowhere more so than the Far North's coast. Marlin and other billfish swarm here in their thousands. In season, yellow-fin tuna and sharks are taken and yellow-tail kingfish all year.

Sheltered water fishing is also excellent - catch snapper, tarakihi, kingfish, kahawai and many other species. You may also enjoy the sight of dolphin, orca, the local bird population and other sea life with excellent photographic opportunities.

Many charter boats are available from Ahipara and Houhora and, further east, from Mangonui - all with skilled and experienced skippers and the fishing is exceptional for all skill levels.

 Surfing

Ninety Mile Beach and Shipwreck Bay on the west coast are famous surfing destinations and recognised as some of the finest surfing beaches in the world. There are magnificent white sand beaches on the east coast of the Aupouri Peninsula and Rarawa Beach is easily accessible. Both Rarawa and Ninety Mile Beach were locations for the Surfing New Zealand National Championships in 2006.

Excellent surfing is also found at Tokerau Beach on the Karikari Peninsula.

All activities marked with the Awanui Visitor Centre symbol can be booked through the Awanui Visitor Centre - please click on the symbol to make a booking. You can also view some of the multitude of local activities.

Rarawa Beach
(Great Exhibition Bay)

This magnificent white silica-sand beach, on the east coast of the Aupouri Peninsula, is easily accessible from State Highway 1.
Ninety Mile Beach and Shipwreck Bay Starting at Ahipara and heading north, this beach is often not for the feint hearted and swimming can be difficult. The surf here is regularly magnificent.
Tokerau Beach on the Karikari Peninsula - a good beach to gather mussels or tua tuas (shellfish) for supper and warm water for swimming. Frequently excellent surf.
Matai Bay at the tip of the Karikari Peninsula, two beautiful crescent-shaped sandy beaches.
Rangiputa a sheltered fine white-sand beach, again on the Karikari Peninsula.

Walks
Cape Reinga Coastal Walkway
This stunning coastal walkway traverses a variety of beautiful and unique landforms, and offers spectacular views of the cape region.

The walkway follows the coastline of Te Paki, and runs from Kapowairua (Spirits Bay) on the East Coast, past Cape Reinga, Cape Maria van Dieman and Te Paki Stream on the West Coast. The walk takes 3 to 4 days and is 53 km.

Cape Reinga Road to Pandora via Kauri Bush
From Cape Reinga Road, the track follows an old vehicle track through low manuka shrub leading you to Pandora, a beautiful sandy bay.

After about 30 minutes a 2 km, 40-minute side track leads from Cape Reinga Road to Kauri Bush, a remnant of kauri forest that once covered the Far North. The detour will take you about 1 hour 30 minutes return.

Another side track, a further 1 km up the road to the right, leads up to Te Paki trig – the highest point in the area. On your way to the summit you can get great views to Spirits Bay / Kapowairua and on a clear day you can see North Cape.

A further 5 minutes along the track you reach the junction with Darkies Ridge. From here you can walk to Pandora or carry on to Tapotupotu Bay.

This is a 6 km, 2 hour walk.

Cape Reinga to Te Werahi Beach
From Cape Reinga the track follows the West Coast leading you down past steep cliffs to the long, sweeping Te Werahi Beach. This section makes a nice short walk or half day excursion. At Te Werahi you will notice the coastline is wilder than the secluded north/east coast bays. This is a 1.25 km, 30 minute walk.

If you wish to continue or link to Te Werahi Gate - Twilight Te Werahi Loop the walk along Te Werahi Beach is about 3 km and takes nearly one hour. The loop can be accessed at the far end of the beach.

This track between Cape Reinga and Te Werahi Beach forms part of the Cape Reinga Coastal Walkway.

Coca Cola Lake, Karikari Peninsula
There is an easy walk around the shoreline of the lake that can be found at the end of Ramp Road, off Inland Road, at Tokerau Beach.
Gum Hole Reserve Walk, Karikari Peninsula
From SH10, follow Inland Road for 2km. to a small roadside parking area. This short (2 minute return) walk is metalled and even. It loops through manuka scrub growing close to the track. The walk passes a series of holes excavated by gum diggers.
Kaitaia Walkway

The walkway entrance is south of Kaitaia at the end of Larmer Road. The track is signposted and is a one and a half hour, 4 km walk.

The track begins with an easy bush walk (Kaitaia Walkway - short walk) through broadleaf and podocarp forest along an old formed roadway. In summer, the lush forest canopy provides cooling shade. After about 30 minutes you come to a junction:

  • A 20-minute return walk up a steep narrow track takes you to a stunning kauri grove. Strewn on the forest floor underneath the kauri are pieces of kauri bark and you can take a moment to study their amazing shapes and patterns.
  • A 15-minute return track takes you to a lookout point over the forest.

From here you can continue on a track which climbs up to a saddle with a good lookout, and continues on to Veza Road.

Lake Ngatu Track
This is an easy walking track leading you around the edge of this dune lake that is situated within a Recreation Reserve. Lake Ngatu is located a 10 minute drive north of Awanui on West Coast Road.

Mangonui Heritage Trail

Click here for a map and description of the route or call in at Awanui Visitor Centre for a leaflet. Beginning and ending at the historic Mangonui Courthouse, the Heritage Trail provides a glimpse of the great wealth of Maori and European history associated with this area. The trail is three kilometres long and accessible on foot or partly by vehicle. The average time it takes to walk the Trail is one and a half hours. Walkers are advised to take the St. Andrew's Walkway to access sites high up above the waterfront and enjoy the spectacular views from near St. Andrew's Church.
Matai Bay to Whangatupere Bay, Karikari Peninsula
The walk takes you from the D.O.C. camp ground at Matai Bay along Merita Beach (the southern of the two coves), around both points to Poroa Stream (one hour return). From there you can make the more difficult walk following the stream for 30 minutes. At the signpost, turn left up the steep, slippery hill to Paraawanui Trig (20 minutes return). The best views are from a little past the summit (142m.). Retrace your steps to the signposts. After 15 minutes along a vehicle track, you come to a crossroads. Turn left at the signposts from where it is 10 minutes to Whagatupere Bay. This is a rocky bay with azure waters and steep forested cliffs tumbling to the water. The entire walk is a three hour return trip. You should contact D.O.C. before commencing the walk (ph: 09 408 6014).
Puheke Recreation Reserve Walk, Karikari Peninsula
From SH10, follow Inland Road for 10.5kms. and then turn left into Rangiputa Road. After 2kms., turn right into Puheke Road. Continue to the parking area at the beach along the unsealed road. You can climb the hill for a superb view of the white sandy beaches of Karikari Bay - Puheke Bay to the east and Karikari Beach to the west - and off to Doubtless Bay and the Aupouri Peninsula. From the parking area it is about a 40 minute return climb. However, in a 4x4 vehicle you can access a higher car park for a shorter walk.
